An early start to be on The Spirit of Tasmania Ferry by 7:30. A beautiful calm morning as we sailed out of Port Melbourne, the city disappears behind us as we head out of the heads.

I did this trip in February 2019 when life was life, before change and loss. A slow trip, slows you down and makes you look not just out the window towards the horizon but to the others on the boat and towards yourself. I did read a bit, but people watching, ocean gazing and walking the decks filled the day. A recliner chair made the trip comfortable and the dining choices are many, but not cheap. There is live entertainment and a kids entertainer. There is a movie theatre but last time I sailed and went to the movies the combination made me very unwell so I didn’t try again, so no seasickness thankfully. Lots of Australian families, more Danes and a smattering of French and German some very impressive backpacks makes me think many will be doing the Overland Trek from Cradle Mountain or perhaps the Cape to Cape.

Plenty of places to charge a device but
wifi is extra and expensive. Optus lasted
for a while but once we were at sea it was
a device free day until we got close to
Tassie. This was a topic of great
discussion amongst fellow travellers.

As we head into Devonport the
overwhelming sight is not really the
Tasmanian Coast line but the smoke we
can see from the Victorian Coast line.

A blustery arrival in Tasmania
